Wanzhou isn't in any of our guide books! Well actually it is, but under the
old name of Wanxian. This is a small city of around 2 million people. It is at
about the halfway point between Chongqin and Yichang, and has been an important
river port for centuries. They used to build boats here out of the cedar trees
found on the slopes.

Our first stop is the Three Gorges Museum where they are trying to
gather the artifacts that are endangered by the dam. They have not had the
time to catalog the collection, much less exhibit it. Still they have a
few items on display including a hanging coffin, a relic of the Ba people.
They have built a display to show how the coffins might have been placed
on the cloff faces. |

The museum has a few items from other eras also. |

But the best part was a farmstead built in the garden of the museum. |

 |
It looks like a farm from 200 years ago. The furniture is rustic and the
kitchen looks like it could have come out of our southwest at the same
point in time. |

Everybody is doing their shopping this morning, and we get a
chance to walk through the market. |
