Auvers sur Oise is a small town 23 km. northwest of Paris. It is a pretty
little town, like many in the Ile de France. But it made its mark in history
when Vincent van Gogh came to town and spent his last years here.
 |
In fact, Vincent and his brother Theodore are still here in
the village cemetery just outside of town. |
 |
Van Gogh painted a number of scenes around the town. If you
look at the lower right hand corner of this picture you can see one of the
posters of his works that the town fathers have set up at the points where
he painted them. |

We had lunch at "Les Roses Ecossaises" (the
Scottish Roses), apparently not named after the wisteria growing around
the window. This was the beginning of Marie's pechers mignons
(little sins). The menu du jour was usually three courses, including
dessert. We started this trip on a low carbohydrate diet, but the
desserts were just too much of a temptation for Marie. Fritz,
however, had more control and usually had a plate of cheese for the third
course. |
 |
This pleasant small town was just what we needed to set the
tone for the rest of our trip. |
