From Pau and Lourdes we had glimpses of the magnificent range of the
Pyrenees. Now it was time to see them close up. We drove up to the ski resort of
Cauterets and then on up to the scenic wonders of the Pont d'Espagne.
Cauterets lies in the bottom of the valley, making it accessible
year-round. It has gondolas to take skiers up onto the surrounding
mountains.
It was still spring thaw, and the melting snowcap trurned every mountain
stream into a torrent.
We drove up onto the mountainside overlooking the valley. The mountain
peaks were still veiled in clouds.
As we drove up higher towards Pont d'Espagne the sun started
to come out and give us views of the peaks.
Pont d'Espagne is a bridge on the road to Spain which crosses a
spectacular narrow gorge. Heer two river come together, each with its own
waterfall. The mist is heavy all the way up on the bridge.
Water, water, everywhere!
Some of the scenery was so wild and primitive that it reminded me of
those old hand-colored postcards from 100 years ago, so I tried to capture
that feel by photo editing.
