We drove by Rocamadour, another prime tourist destination in the Périgord.
The overlook from across the valley provided wonderful views of the village.
When we drove down into town, however, we discovered two things: 1) You can't
really get a good view of Rocamadour from inside Rocamadour, and 2) you can't
park a car in Rocamadour for love nor money!
Rocamadour was founded by Saint Amadour some time around the dawn of Christianity
in this region. Upto the thirteenth century it was a major pilgrimage
site. This was ended by the great rockfall of 1476. In the nineteenth
century the Bishop of Cahors had the site restored in hopes of reviving the pilgrimages.
The pilgrims didn't come, but the tourists did.
