The City
Salzburg is one of our favorite cities. We love the beautiful old town, the
fascination with music, the cheerful people, and the grand natural setting. We
had last visited to see the
Christmas
Markets in December of 2002. Now we were staying just an hour's drive away,
so it was the first place we visited on this trip.
It was Trinity Sunday, and we wanted to hear the music in the cathedral of
the city of Mozart. It wasn't Mozart that they were playing that morning,
however. They were honoring the army regiments from the area, and old soldiers
showed up in full dress uniform proudly nearing the flags of their regiments.
The cathedral was filled with the music of a military brass band,

The
Land
Salzburg is best known as the city of Mozart, but it is also the name of one
of the provinces of Austria, the Salzburgerland. Geographically it wraps around
the south-eastern corner of Bavaria. The Salzburgerland, along with its
neighbor, the Tirol, has some of the best ski areas in the Alps, places such as
Kitzbuhel, Dorfgastein, Mayrhoffen, Innsbruck and Kaprun.
The Salzburgerland also has some of the most spectacular scenery in the Alps,
especially in the Hohe Tauern National Park. We were overwhelmed by the natural
beauty of this area. Click below for a sampling of the pictures we took.

We came back to the Salzburg area a couple of days later to visit the Salzburg
Open Air Museum.
